How to Get ARCs of Romance Books
If you have spent some time in the online book community, you may have come across the term ARC or ARC reader. I was always confused about what it was, what it involved, and how people had the opportunity to get ARCs. Before I fully involved myself in the book community, I was jealous of “book influencers” who got to read amazing books before everyone else. I always thought, “What do I have to do to get my hands on an early copy of a book?” But after doing a bit of research (aka Google), I learned obtaining an ARC is a lot easier than I thought. You don’t need a gazillion followers online or a Master’s in Literature and Publishing. Just having a simple love for books is all you need!
What is an ARC?
An ARC is an Advanced Reader Copy – publishing companies and indie authors will release a certain number of copies to help get the word out about the book! Ever wondered how books automatically have reviews on the back right when they come out? That is from ARCs. Sometimes you’ll see those reviews from book lovers like yourself, from other authors, or publications like Publisher’s Weekly.
Can anyone be an ARC reader?
Yes! While some applications will have specific requirements such as online follower count, others will simply ask that you love books, the genre of the book you are applying for and that you vow to give your honest opinion. You don’t need to have experience in the publishing industry or have a book blog to become an ARC reader.
Where can I get a Romance ARC?
My favorite site to get romance ARCs is NetGalley – it is free to use and will give you access to a large library full of ARCs. What I also love is that NetGalley also has books available that have already been released and you may find your next favorite read on there. It’s a perfect starting point for newbie ARC readers. You can also receive ARCs by contacting indie authors directly, applying for Influencer/ARC programs through publishing companies, or PR (or Public Relations) companies on Instagram. Do your research and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, the worst thing they can say is no!

Do I get to keep it?
Yes! Depending on how you receive your copy, once it is in your possession it is yours – but make sure you do not share any spoilers or information relating to the book before it’s released. Not all companies or authors will give you guidelines or rules so if you are curious as to what you can or can’t do with your copy, don’t hesitate to ask. Because it is an advanced copy, you do not have the right to resell or share it online with others – this would be considered pirating and is a big no-no in the ARC and book community (and all entertainment communities).
So, what now?
Go out there and find your next favorite book! Being an ARC reader is an awesome accomplishment and it is rewarding. To be able to give your opinion on books and help market your favorite authors is a privilege. If you are still curious about where to start, here are some companies and websites for ARC readers!
