“Whirlwind” by Kayla Grosse – Book Review

Who else was a fan of the movie Twister and then its 2024 sequel Twisters??

I would like to personally thank Glenn Powell for turning me into a tornado chaser fangirl. And to Kayla Grosse, who has turned me into a Professor Ryker West fangirl.

The first book I’ve finished for April is Whirlwind by Kayla Grosse. Whirlwind is an action-packed romance about a master’s student who loves storm chasing and weather and her super hot professor Ryker West. As a teenager, Finley was obsessed with Ryker and his YouTube channel; watching him travel around and chase storms and looking super hot while doing so. When Ryker invites Finley on a research trip to chase a storm, their relationship is tested and the lines between Professor and Student begin to blur – and oh, did I mention – there is only one bed? Y’all should know, I love a good age-gap trope mixed with a forbidden love trope.

If you are looking for a quick read to get out of a March reading slump, keep reading!

What I Loved

I wanted to start reading romances that had FMCs with relatable bodies. Most romances have a main character with a snatched waist and a flat tummy. While that body type may be relatable to others, it’s not relatable to me. Having a female lead who looks like you – whether that be race, body type, or physical disability – makes the reading experience so much more enjoyable.

What I loved most about Whirlwind was the representation of a plus-sized female character who didn’t feel more empowered after falling for the MMC. I also enjoyed the fast-paced storyline that kept me intrigued from start to finish. The book and audiobook contain moments of storms and tornadoes. Listening to the audiobook made the reading experience 5x better!

Oh, and the book is a dual POV!

What Could Be Improved

If I could change one thing about it – it would be MAKE IT LONGER! I finished the book within a day and the audiobook was only 4-5 hours long. I loved that it was fast-paced, but I wish I had more of Ryker and Finley!

Final Thoughts & Recommendation

Whirlwind was the perfect book to help me out of my Kiss of the Basilisk slump. After reading such a heavy and long story, it is always nice to enjoy a fun and exciting read like Whirlwind. I think readers who love forbidden love or taboo romances would enjoy this book! It contains sexually explicit content, strong language, and lots of action. I recommend reading it in tandem with the audiobook for an immersive reading experience.

I give it 5/5 stars!
